Persuasive Essay On Legalizing Marijuana

There has been a fairly active debate on the legalization of marijuana for generations. This debate is leaning more towards legalization every day, and a few states have even legalized marijuana for medical and recreational use. Although smoking weed is more common in today’s world, there are still many people that wish to keep it illegal. Marijuana could help people with severe medical conditions, keep kids out of trouble, and is also less harmful than alcohol and tobacco. The first reason marijuana should be legalized is for serious medical conditions such as Glaucoma. Glaucoma is an eye condition in the optic nerve that can eventually lead to blindness. The national eye institute states “Smoking marijuana lowered the IOP [the fluid pressure inside the eye] of people with Glaucoma.” (NEI.1) Although marijuana is a huge benefit for people with this condition, it only helps for a fixed amount of time before the effects wear off. Treatment is needed for twenty-four hours a day, but cannabis usually only lasts around four hours. No matter the consequences, kids will still smoke to fit in, or just for fun. Legalizing marijuana won't increase the usage of the drug, it will simply keep the ones doing it out of unnecessary trouble.
