Our nation was built on the belief of free will and throughout time with the illegalization of cannabis that free will has been taken away. The question is not why cannabis should be legalized but why is it illegal in the first place. Any individual in the United States deserve the right to make their own choices for themselves. The government only has the right to interfere if the individual’s choices endanger others. The American government has clearly stated that cannabis is public enemy number one and has taken away our rights. The current drug laws are not working as planned and are doing more harm than good. No better example of this is Colorado where marijuana got legalized 2 years ago. With this legalization thousands of citizens received medical marijuana cards. These citizens varied in illness but they chose and preferred cannabis, no longer wanting the side effects that came with of over the counter prescriptions. These medical marijuana patients are living proof that cannabis does indeed have a medical use and is beneficial for multiple illnesses. America currently spends billions on the war on drugs and the legalization of cannabis would end to all the useless spending. There has been no evidence that prohibition has accomplished its goal. In fact it is even easier to obtain cannabis now then it was when the prohibition stared. Proof of this is the popularity of cannabis in high schools and the amount of teenage usage. If high school students can easily obtain cannabis then the war on drugs has completely failed. Rather than spreading fear the education system should be open with the students and focus on educational cannabis programs.
