Marijuana, also known as cannabis, is a psychoactive drug that can also be used as a medicine. Marijuana gives the user a euphoric feeling also known as a high. There is controversy in whether or not marijuana should be available for medical and/or recreational use. Marijuana is a safe drug in comparison to other street and prescribed drugs. There are many positive effects of legalizing marijuana such as, decrease in crime rate, government profit, and safety controls for the drug. Marijuana can be used as an effective medicine for sick people who cannot be helped by other drugs. Marijuana should be legalized in the United States. To begin, marijuana is a very safe drug. It is a known fact that no one have ever died from overdose of marijuana. This cannot be said about other prescription and street drugs. Forty-five of overdoses are caused by prescription drugs which is more than the overdose rate of drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and amphetamines which cause thirty-nine percent of overdoses. The government will be making money off of the newly legalized drug. It will be able to put a tax on the product and be able to make good use of the profit. Due to the drug being sold legally, drug dealers will lose money. One hundred fifty nine million people use or have used marijuana. Without the profit from this popular drug many drug dealers will go out of business. With the legalization of marijuana the drug will become more available for medical use. Another reason marijuana should be legalized is because people should have the freedom to choose what they do with their lives.
