Let’s think about alcohol. The CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) reports that there are more than 37,000 deaths as a result of alcohol abuse. Alcohol is one of the more toxic drugs being used today. “Using just 10 times what one would use to get the desired effect could lead to death”(Marijuana vs. Alcohol). Not only does alcohol affect the liver but it also affects the brain. Alcohol kills brain cells, while on the other hand, there has been many research that shows that marijuana doesn’t in fact kill brain cells but yet actually protect the brain cells. Many say that marijuana is very addictive and will ruin lives but studies have shown that less than 10% of frequent marijuana smokers get a physical addiction to the drug. When quitting there isn’t nearly the same withdrawal effects as alcohol. Alcohol is extremely addictive and can result in major or potentially fatal physical withdrawal. Marijuana has been illegal for almost a century now and with the new push for legalization, it will soon be overturned. As it becomes legal, jobs will become available. You will need farmers who will take care of the plants and make sure they are giving us top notch product. Then there will be distribution. You will need knowledgeable people who can inform the consumer of what they are buying. Then comes the shops that sell the pieces that you smoke out of. You will also need regulators of marijuana to make sure things don’t get out of hand. In area’s where legalization is in full swing, there will be a big influx of employment opportunities(Becker).
