What is a refugee? A refugee is someone who is no longer safe in their own home, and feel they need to move to seek safety in other countries. America has been gracious enough to be one of the many countries that has become a safe haven for those people. But are we doing enough? Are we doing enough to help their transition go as smoothly as possible? How does it affect us Americans? Are we safe? More can always be done to help those in need, but we are doing the best we can for the refugees and those of us that already live here. Knowing that we are doing everything we can we also need to know that what we are doing is effective. Not everyone will agree that we have a good system, because there are things that we can improve. With the system we have in place, the refugees applying for asylum in the US have to go through many tests and screenings before being accepted. Even after all of these tests, there has only been a handful of incidents where there was a terrorist attack made by a refugee, and an even smaller handful that were harmful/deadly. There is also an “in-person interview with each refugee applicant before deciding” whether they can be approved for resettlement. (U.S. Department of State: U.S. Refugee Admissions Program) Meaning that with the thousands of refugees that are accepted every year, there has only been a handful of attacks. CNN reported that there had been NO fatal attacks in the U.S. as of January 29 of this year.
