Adoption is important to our society because it’s an opportunity to give children in need a family. The amount of homosexuals looking to adopt is increasing every year, but it becomes a struggle due to laws in some parts of the United States. Adoption to same sex couples should become legalized everywhere because a person’s ability to parent has nothing to do with his or her sexual orientation. Ronnie Musgrove, Mississippi’s former governor who was opposed to same sex adoption states, “As I have gotten older, I came to understand that a person's sexual orientation has absolutely nothing to do with their ability to be a good parent" (Lewin). Every couple deserves equal rights when it comes to adopting a child.
Should same sex couples be granted the rights while adopting? Some people have a problem with same sex adoption because they think they are unfit to raise a child. However, the rates of gay adoption are rising rapidly. In 2010, census data revealed that “one-third of the 3,484 gay and lesbian couples in Mississippi were raising children.” (Lowenberg) Updated results showed that “As many as 2 million to 3.7 million U.S.

According to Daniel Jordan, a United States District Judge, they should be because more specifically, “Mississippi’s ban violated the Constitution’s equal protection clause.” (Lowenberg) Jordan’s action shows that more and more people are supporting gay adoption. Based on research, “Public support for allowing gays and lesbians to adopt children has steadily increased.” (Doyle) Some people argue that children shouldn’t be able to be adopted by same sex couples because they think they lack the skills to parent. They couldn’t be more wrong. Among other things, “the ability of good parenting is not influenced by sexual orientation. A variety of studies have shown that gay and lesbian couples raise children who have the same social and mental abilities as children raised by straight couples.”
