Standardized testing in schools When you go to school, do you ever wonder about why we have to take so many tests that do not even affect our grade? Or why the tests get so difficult to answer the questions? That is why there should not be standardized testing in America.
The first reason why standardized testing should not be allowed is that it is affecting the students directly. In order to graduate in Minnesota’s high school system, you must pass the Graduation Required Assessment for Diploma test or GRAD. This means students have to keep taking the test until they pass. “ They reward the ability to quickly answer superficial questions that do not require real thought” (P. 20), said Jack O’ Connell, California State Superintendent. So the standardized testing is inaccurate because it has no real thought put into the question. Also, when it comes to standardized testing, some kids do not try their best on the tests because they know it does not affect their grade.
The third and final reason is that the students cannot prepare for the test. Most of the students cannot reach proficiency because they do not know how to prepare for it. Therefore, students tend to do worse on the standardized tests because they cannot study for it. Students also walk into the classroom not knowing what they are testing which leads to stress and anxiety. Also, students might have off days, and something might have happened at home.
Some people may say that standardized testing could help people figure out how well students are doing overall to see what they need to learn. Some may also say that the tests could tell if the students need a tutor or how fast the teacher
