Most people don’t realize how dangerous it is, to take your eyes off the road for a few seconds. Which doesn’t seem like much, but can add up to a couple of football fields, depending on how fast you’re going. As a result, the driver gets less time to react to the unforeseen which could’ve been seen, if the cell phone was never a distraction. Texting or talking on cell phones while driving or even when walking is dangerous for our own safety and the safety of others, and it has to be illegal.
Many people don’t think about the repercussions of using a cell phone while driving. For instance, children could occasionally get injure or in the worst-case scenario even die. Less people will get injure or die on the road if laws that don’t permit the use of cell phones while driving or walking are implemented. Law enforcement and phone carriers could work together to develop a plan for a solution. For example, applications that would send phone calls to voice mail or reply texts with preset messages while driving. Phone carriers have the must influence and authority on the subject. Multi-tasking while driving limits drivers in different ways. For example, drivers who talk on the phone while driving use one hand to hold the phone and the other hand for the steering wheel. Therefore, using turning signals becomes more complicated and this may be one of the reasons why drivers do not use them. Also, it is harder to turn your body and look at the blind spots when unsure if there’s a car. Sometime, emotions can affect your driving as well, getting a call from a family member saying a close relative is in the hospital or die could be devastating and some decide not to drive in those conditions.
