School boards are pushing towards a year-round school schedule. Although a year-round schedule raises concerns for parents, staff, and students, there are also many benefits to this. Even though a year-round school schedule may seem alarming at first, it is the best choice academically.
Although many students spend their summer earning money, year-round schooling gives plenty of long breaks throughout the year, including a shortened summer break. Students would suffer financially because they still have the same number of breaks in the year, and more often. “Because students are still required to spend the same amount of time in the classroom, year-round schooling includes more frequent breaks which are commonly implemented through two to three months in the classroom and one to three weeks off” (Year Round Schooling? 2). Year-round schooling could decrease time for families and cause difficulties with scheduling childcare. However, Year-Round School: How it Works and Why it's Awesome says, “We pack lots of fun stuff into their time off during the summer months”. Parents and kids still have time to plan out fun things for summer and all other months during break. Parents also worry that their kids may forget about previous lessons during their many lengthy breaks. However, year-round schooling would do the opposite. It would prevent students from forgetting what they learned from the previous year over summer break by shortening it down. “Students have less time to forget materials after a long span of being away from school” (Year Round Schooling.) The breaks would probably come with some small assignments to keep lessons fresh in students’ minds, like a less intense weekend.
