Philosophy Statement

Trust, safety, and consistency are the three main components that make a classroom run at it's peak efficiency. A child who feels like the classroom does not contain all three of these components will not be able to learn at their highest level. The first and most important component of the classroom is safety. Safety is a primal need of life. If a student does not feel safe in the classroom there is little you can do to get them to focus on academics. Trying to ensure one's safety is a very exhausting process and leaves little energy for academics. This is why safety must come before academics. Consistency means having the same rules and guidelines everyday. This program suggest that consistency means applying the rules on an individual basis. This program also suggest to avoid using humor or sarcasm in the classroom. In my setting as a high school substitute, these concepts are hard to implement. First of all, I have to treat all students equally because without building a relationship with the class, it would come across as favoritism. Secondly, while I do believe sarcasm has to be used with care, I believe overall humor, in small doses, is essential to help make the material relatable to students. There are a couple principles I agree make for a consistent classroom. First, rituals are very important because it cuts down on confusion and chaos for the teacher and students. Secondly, always approaching a situation with an even-toned voice. This allows you as a teacher to avoid power struggles with a student and also models how conflicts can be resolved without yelling. This is one area I have struggled with in the classroom. Sometimes I am too passive. I'm not one that will get angry or yell at most things but I also have trouble talking with a commanding tone. Most times when I give instructions, it comes off as more of a suggestion than a direction. I have gotten better over the years but I still don't think it's at the level it needs to
