The mission statement to "Serve and Protect" is not sufficient enough to be considered a valid mission statement. We all know that a police officer’s job is to serve its community and protect those that live in the community. A valid mission statement should encompass what the department stands for, why they exist, and what their purpose is in the community they serve (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2014). Mission statements are valuable for a police department. They can serve as a "road map" for the department. Without having a guide to follow people can wander, or things seem inconsistent within the police department. Mission statements are written with the help of the community. This can reveal the relationship the members of the community have
