The police force we all know has one main focus, to protect people and the property in which they stand. Patrolling the areas in which they are assigned to, they make sure civilians follow the law and they handle any breakage of the law as well. Our police force is supposed to make us feel safe wherever we are. They have undoubtedly done a great job in doing so. However, over the past couple of years, the police force has taken a toll for the worse.
Some issues include police departments bringing in new tactics and ways of controlling instead of asking the community first on some ideas about how they should change their ways. Russell explained that police officer’s know how to protect, but what they forget to do is to serve. All police officers have a patch on their sleeve that says “To Protect and Serve” however Russell says the serving part of the sleeve is not practiced enough. This is the big part of the reform Russell is trying to find a fix to. He expresses that police officers need to stop thinking it's the community versus the police and more of a one team one mission type mindset.

The book Cop in the Hood made me more aware of what cops have to deal with now-a-days. There are several different policies that ensure people’s freedoms, however, that makes a cop’s job much more difficult. After reading this book I was also made aware how important people in society are to a cop. It makes their job easier, which in-turn allows society to be a safer place for all people. A cop is not able to stop all crimes without the help of society.

Officers need to build trust between themselves and the communities they serve; which means, responding to the calls that are considered “non-emergency. This will help the community not only build trust, but hold the officers more accountable.
They are expected to help the police and even are recommended by the government. If I was in charge they would not be in such a high power, so we would need to change the behaviors of the current and future police. This could be done by providing extra training and a more in depth education. To really ensure a long term change, we would also have to recruit and hire more law enforcement. I would have each officer in a different specialty to really excel at their job because many people do not believe the police are doing their job or if so they are not doing it well.

Today’s media and news outlets have portrayed the police force in a negative connotation, which is very contradictory to protecting the people, the police forces job. In order for police to work accordingly and effectively they must use their own tactics such as building rapport, rather than having hatred for cops, community members must place trust into the officers so the crimes will cease. The public and police need to work together hand in hand in order to feel the comfort in each other’s presence. If the community and police work together, it will lead to a more efficient police force and a better relationship between the public and these government workers.
It is also important to support the officers ' with resources such as; language skills to communicate with community members, supporting flexible work hours, choosing proper officers who have the right personalities, having a police substation in the community, and training the officers in terrorism intelligence gathering (Newman, & Clarke, 2010). There is a risk that officers can become too close to the community and become suborned; so it is important to check up on the officers reports, and activities. It may be difficult to implement community policing in immigrant neighborhoods, especially in Arab neighborhoods when there are not many Arab police officers. Truth be told, there are not enough police leadership to reduce crime and develop model policies and practices in the police force. Senior leadership must develop their successor to pick up the pieces and carry the torch. Officers should have this characteristic before they are hired and should be open for the police academy to repair and strengthen them.
