Math Placement Exam Summary
For my math placement exam project, I decided to do problems from the Ithaca College math exam. The 25 problems I did were mostly Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and some Geometry. I had a lot of trouble with a lot of the questions, because I either didn’t know how to do them or I haven’t learned the material yet. The other placement exam came from Barton College. This exam had problems in areas such as Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Probability, and Statistics. This exam had a significant amount more problems than the Ithaca exam. The Ithaca exam questions seemed more relevant to subjects I will need to know in college. The Ithaca College placement exam is a good example of mathematical areas I need to be proficient in while in college.

I did find the exam that I took to be very difficult. I was not sure how to do many of the problems that were given. Even though the exam I took had less questions than the other exam, that did not mean that the material was easier. Honestly, I thought the tests were going to be easier than they were. Maybe I am just bad at math, but I really had no idea what I was doing with some of those problems. I thought the tests would be easier because than less students would have to be placed in the lowest math class. I sort of thought that colleges just wanted to get some of the course requirements out of the way, like math. I guess I was wrong.
Calculators were permitted on the test that I took, and figures for some problems were available online. This test was an online test, but there is an option of going to the school before orientation to take the test in person.
Personally, I did not feel prepared for this kind of test. That being said, I am not the best test taker. I did not feel prepared because I felt as though I did not know any of the test material.
I think to do better on the test that I took I should review much more Algebra 1, and also

I think continuing to learn and review things this year in Math
Analysis will help me gain a better understanding of math for these tests.
The test starts out with Algebra 1 including things like pi, fractions, and inequalities. It then moves on to algebra 2 material such as graphing lines, sin, and multi step equations. The
Geometry includes finding the height of a triangle, sin, cos, and tan. The easiest problem on the test for me was finding the height of the triangle. I do well with remembering formulas, so finding the area, or height of a shape is usually easiest for me. I think to get a better understanding of the material on the test I should use the the study guides that Ithaca College
Math Department provides for incoming freshmen. After taking the test the college grades the test out of a 10 scale. If you get a nine or above you are in Group 4, which is the highest level math class that the school offers. When I take the test I think I will probably be in group 1 or 2 because I did not know what I am doing. The Barton College test is broken into groups after the tests are graded also. I think I would get put into the higher level math class if I apply there. I
