Field Analysis Of Regents

Field Research and Analysis For our field research we decided to hand out surveys to the students of “High School of Economics and Finance” which is the school in which we attend. Our goal for conducting this research is to find out whether or not the students find the State Regents Exam to be too difficult. We expected many students to say it’s too difficult and that the Department of Education should make it easier for students to receive a passing grade. For our surveys we asked students if they’ve taken any Regents in the past. If they answered yes, then we would ask whether or not they’ve ever failed a Regents in the past. If they did in fact fail one or more Regents exam, we asked for their score in order to see whether the cut-off score …show more content…

This is because that piece of information will give us a good percentage of the number of students that are failing the Regents. Another useful piece of information that we obtained are the responses to whether or not the students feel that the teacher are covering enough material in order to raise the likelihood of students passing. Using this piece of information we can determine whether it’s the students that are not trying hard enough or the teachers. We gave out surveys to exactly 20 students in the 9th pd Global History class. taught by Mr. Shinohara. We chose to do this because the 9th pd Global History class consists of students who perform at a higher level than average students. We chose to do this because the higher performing students tend to have a good history with Regents Exams. We also did this because if the survey results for this class indicate that the Regents is too difficult, then we can have more evidence from above average …show more content…

The rest all said that they indeed thought that the regents was quite challenging. Furthermore, the interesting fact is that the students who said the regents were hard also said that they didn’t think the teachers were teaching them enough material in order to pass the test. From this we can conclude that it can very much be that the teachers are also at fault. In order to justify this point or perhaps disprove it, we surveyed a few teachers on this topic. The results that we got were quite similar. All teachers chose the same answer for 90% of the questions which means they all share a universal view on the regent examinations. All teachers said that their material wasn’t too hard for the average student to understand, as long as the student is motivated and eager to learn. However, they do in fact state that the regents is not a good indication of a student’s ability, upon observations, we have concluded that many students with a gpa of 90% or higher also struggle to pass on the regents. Above all math teacher, one of them in our school Mr. Chandra is a geometry/trig/pre-calculus instructor and upon his many years of experience and having dealt with all types of students had said that he personally thinks the math regents especially trigonometry and above are way above the standards of the curriculum he is set out to teach.
