Arguments Against Standardized Testing

“Stress is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do, but it doesn’t get you anywhere” (Anonymous 1). Many students in our country at this instant are stressing for standardized tests that they have to take. Stressing out for tests doesn’t just happen to students that aren’t doing well in school. In fact, it is more the opposite. The students that are the superlative are usually the ones that are stressing over the standardized tests. This is one of the problems with uniform testing. Although some citizens say that standardized tests aren’t stressful, they are obviously ignoring the facts. The special needs individual and non-English speaker have to take the test even though they aren’t up to the other kids’ levels yet. In New York, only 5.7% of students with disabilities actually met up to the standards on the tests (Engage 19). This means that it is really difficult for a student with disabilities to meet the standard score pointed out in standardized testing, and we should, at least, try to make it easier for them. Virginia schools used to have separate tests for people who haven’t mastered the English language, but now because of the issue of currency, they have to give the same tests to all their students (Ramirez 1). This is just plain unfair to the students that they have to take the same test that discriminates them just because the schools were too cheap. Some older students who take these standardized tests don’t take them seriously. There is no point in trying to measure a group of student’s abilities if most of them aren’t even trying. In doing this, they would not get accurate data; therefore, wasting billions of dollars on testing. In 2004, many juniors in a high school in New Mexico just had fun with the tests because they didn’t count for anything. They would just make different shapes by filling in the bubbles (Contreras 1). These tests at least need to count for a grade or something to that
