The Professional School Counselor and Assessment
The ASCA National Model states that interpretation of cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests is within the scope of practice for school counselors. However, it is inappropriate for a school counselor to coordinate these testing programs. (ASCA, 2012) School counselors may directly conduct assessments that involve data used for personal or career counseling, such as assessment interviews. Some examples of tests that can be administered, scored, and interpreted by counselors are the MMPI-2, Beck Depression Inventory, Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), WAIS, projective tests, and the Wide Range Achievement Test (Hays, 2013).

“The school counselor will begin compiling data related to the school counseling program, storing it in such a manner that they can easily share with administration, other counselors, and the advisory council. The school counselor will meet with the school principal to identify data sources readily available to guide planning of the school counseling program to include: current school, student, and system data (e.g., school population demographics, standardized test scores, attendance statistics, retention rates, discipline data, credits earned, dropout rate, graduation rate, needs assessments, etc.).” (WV DOE, n.d.)
Counseling Interventions and Enhancing Testing Skills Youth Light, Inc. (n.d.) offers resource guides that could be useful for leading small group sessions with students who are experiencing test anxiety. West Virginia also has Student Support Teams, of which the school counselor is an integral part. “The professional school counselor maintains a critical role in providing access to early and ongoing interventions for at-risk students.
