Proposal For A Program That Impact The Lives Of UMD Students

I am writing to propose to you a program that could greatly impact the lives of students currently on campus and the success of UMD students to come. I hope that this letter will help to showcase the benefits a Student Academic Advisement Program (SAAP) could have for our school and my peers. This letter will act as a proposal for my vision, but before I get into the details, allow me to introduce myself.

Background
I am a senior at UMD and will graduate next spring. I started as a freshman on campus August 2014 seeking a degree in Actuarial Science and Statistics. This major and career is not very popular and has specific job requirements that are not listed in APAS beyond the major requirements. The academic advisor I was assigned, while advanced in his field and well versed in the University’s registration process, did not understand the intricacies of the actuarial field. Having a SAAP on campus would have greatly affected the choices I made in scheduling my classes and my overall success on campus. Having an assigned peer advisor can help with getting to know the campus and would be an invaluable resource for incoming freshman. Being on campus for three or four years provides experience that freshman often desperately need throughout the year (not just at the beginning). I am proposing that these two types of advising can come from two separate but unified programs. I envision the prescriptive personal advising coming from a SAAP. Students can develop a more personal relationship with their peers. Most developmental advising can come from professional academic advisors. Professionals should be the ones guiding our students’ development and growth in the school, whereas the more personal advising should come from the students’ peers.
