Apollo 11’s Moon landing took a decade of work by thousands of people. In 1973, the total cost of the Apollo program reported was $25.4 billion. The most expensive parts were the Apollo spacecraft and the Saturn V launch vehicles. In 2009, NASA reported a figure of $170 or around $200 billion in today’s money. The question if the Apollo program was worth that kind of investment has been a topic of discussion for decades.
Something that had one of the biggest impacts on the world as it is today is colonization. There’s no way that the world we live in would be the same without it. From colonization, a multitude of good things came out of it, such as wealth for many nations, new land discovered, and colonies established. However, all of those things came at a price to others. The negatives of colonization affected the Native Americans (North, South, and Central America) and the Africans.
After reading the story The Martian by Andy Weir, I believe that humans should not colonize Mars for many reasons. First, I do not think we should leave this beautiful planet. Though the population is growing rapidly, there is still lots of land available that is uninhabited. Also, I am certain that the cost of traveling to Mars is way too expensive for the average human being on our planet.
One reason is that money in space should be spent on preserving Earth. Immigration Immigration has made up the United States as a nation since the first being arrived, which was about 400 years ago. Beyond being a powerful demographic force responsible for what the population became but also how the country became what we are today. Immigrants contribute to many of the economic, social, and political processes that are foundational to the US nation. Immigrants and refugees have their ups and downs, just like everyone else.
As President Obama had once stated, “We were strangers once, too”. This quote itself tells us as American Citizens we should not criticize those who choose to leave their home and come to the United States for a chance of success, but in five simple words. Many of us were taught the history of the United States, up to the point of how our ancestors came here, and why we chose to become a country. So in other words the issues of immigration goes further than the Mexico-United States border, it goes as far back as the moment the United States of America became a country. Now you may be wondering “How does this affect us as individuals?”
This is a good quote because it says how close humans are to making it to Mars. NASA has even said that humans will be going soon. “In the next few decades, Nasa will take steps toward establishing a human presence beyond Earth.” (Knapton). All these possibilities point to humans going to Mars in the next few decades.
If you leave earth for Mars, you are leaving your loved ones behind and you’ll be stuck on Mars with strangers. Like what the Scope magazine said, Just imagine being crammed in a tiny spaceship for 210 days with unfamiliar people . Going to Mars is not worth losing the people who you love and who is special to you. Mars is a completely different environment.
“Discovering aliens is a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.” -NASA (Gaffey). Aliens are real because there is a lot of evidence, there are thousands of reported sightings, and people have reported stories from personal experience. After a lot of research over the years, it has been proven that there has been life on Mars (Day 20). NASA has been able to locate evidence of a potential solar system that is about 39 light years away from the Earth (Gaffey).
Colonizing Mars Mars is often voted by people as being the most likely place for humans to colonize after we are done with Earth. This is often said because of Mars’s similar size to Earth and similar climate. However, Mars might not be the best place to go when we decide to make our first extra-terrestrial home. Whether you believe we should colonize another planet or not, evidence proves that moving to Venus is both logical and cost effective. There is much more promise in visiting Venus and much more we can learn.
There is no doubt that reaching to Mars will facilitate several changes in the current human society. Going to the Red planet has been a huge dream of humanity for several decades.
