The Horrors of GMO Sugar Beets A GMO product, or genetically modified organism, is any organism that has had its genetic material altered to change its characteristics using genetic engineering techniques. Many products are now genetically modified, including sugar beets. According to Annie Baxter of Marketplace ,sugar beets are used as a principal source of sugar in the United States and are the source of about 60% of the domestic sugar production. Recently, consumers have addressed the concern that their sugar was produced using GMO engineering, bringing attention to the production of GMO sugar beets and raising the question, Are GMO sugar beets safe to consume?
