Ever since President Trump’s healthcare plan was announced in early 2017, there has been a back and forth debate between people on specific propositions he makes in his plan to repeal Obamacare and create his own plan. One of those specific propositions is the state of coverage for people with pre-existing health conditions. Some believe that his health care plan still allows for people with pre-existing health conditions to be covered, while others believe that his health care plan is too mirky in the way that it addresses pre-existing health conditions. On September 22, 2017, Vice President Mike Pence met with Governor LePage from Maine to discussed the new health care plan. Pence said, “Graham-Cassidy requires coverage for people with preexisting conditions. It creates those protections. It creates a more equitable distribution of resources over time to states all around the country on a per-person basis” (“Remarks by the Vice President and Maine Governor LePage on Graham-Cassidy”). The reason Pence went to go talk with LePage is because before Obamacare, Maine had a similar health care plan to that of Trump’s when it came to pre-existing health conditions. LePage says back in 2011, Maine passed Public Law 90 which protected those with pre-existing health conditions. He said the process that protected people with pre-existing health conditions is called “behind the curtain.” In this process, all the state needed to know is if a person had a pre-existing health condition and from there, the state took care of it. His plan will give states the power to decide what they do when it comes to health coverage for those with pre-existing health conditions. It’s their choice whether they want to to allow insurers to base the amount of coverage they provide a patient on pre-existing conditions or not. However, states must provide information on how they intend to maintain affordable health insurance for those with pre-existing health conditions (“Trump says GOP's health bill protects pre-existing conditions. Here's the truth”). To supporters of Trump’s healthcare plan, the fact that states have to provide information on how they plan to maintain affordable health insurance for people with pre-existing health conditions justifies that Trump’s healthcare plan efficiently covers those with pre-existing health
