First and foremost, as the Human Resource Manager I will have to advise the company to proceed quickly and with caution. A successful company does not need a knee jerk reaction to conversations being had at the water cooler. The company needs to ensure they do and know the laws around a union. The do’s and don’ts when it comes to responding to a union is very important to understand. As a company you need to answer a few questions before you proceed. Do you want to remain a union free company? This is a must answer question that will map out how to proceed. If working with a union is not a big deal you can take a softer approach. Educating your employees on where the company stands and why they hold that position. For the last 15 years the company has taken care of its own. This is the first time that the company will not be able to financially support it. The next part is where you get into why you the company cannot afford it. In the last year we have seen recent downturns in the economy resulting in a loss in company revenue. Do not try to sugar coat it, be honest and be genuine, the employees will listen. Outline the cons of unionizing and how it will affect them on a personal level. Discuss items that affect them not the company, such as other company’s benefits packages that are unionized. Lastly remind them that the company has done its best to support them throughout their raise. If the leaders of the company are doing their job the employees will support the company on the down slope. The don’ts, when dealing with a possible unionizing force are just as important as the do’s. Do not try to weed out those within the company that are fostering this environment.
