This assignment focuses on PSHE and how it is carried out in school.
PSHE stands for Personal Social Health and Economic education. PSHE education is a programme of study that provides children with knowledge and understanding of the world and skills needed to cope with present and future life, “PSHE education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives” (PSHE Association, n.d.). Therefore, it is a subject which holds great importance and impact on children's attainment, progress and future life.

Thus, children need an environment in which they feel safe and secure in order for them to achieve their full potential. The PSHE association (2014) states that PSHE can help contribute towards safeguarding children by teaching topics relating to health, safety and relationships, “Teaching about safety and relationships as part of PSHE education contributes to how schools approach the safeguarding of pupils. It helps them to recognise when they and others are at risk and equips them with the skills, strategies and language they need to take appropriate action…It is clear, therefore, the PSHE education plays a vital part in helping to meet school’s responsibilities to safeguard their pupils”. For instance, in the theme ‘Going for goals’ within SEAL (DfE, 2005), children can reflect on their strengths, which can help to from a sense of achievement. This in turn helps them to build confidence in themselves, “The Going for goals theme…gives an important opportunity for all children’s abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued” (DfE, 2005). Similarly the theme ‘Good to be me’ helps children develop self-awareness and helping them to feel good about themselves hence boosting their self-esteem, “The Good to be me theme…explores feelings in the context of the child as an individual, developing self-awareness and helping the child to realise that it really is ‘Good to be me'” (DfE, 2005). This relates to esteem needs within Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (cited in McLeod 2014) which includes “achievement” and “self-respect”. Esteem needs are also identified as basic needs, as Maslow’s hierarchal pyramid “can be divided into basic (or deficiency) needs (e.g. physiological, safety, love, and esteem) and growth needs” (McLeod, 2014). Therefore suggesting that children’s esteem needs are essential in supporting personal development.
