To best attend to the educational and behavioral needs of students, it is essential for educators to identify the precise areas of deficits in student performance. Within the MTSS framework the collection, analyzation and integration of collected data, are crucial steps that provide this necessary insight to best meet improved student outcomes.
Purpose of Data Collection and Integration The purpose of data collection within the MTSS framework, fundamentally is to determine if students are learning and educators are delivering content effectively. Two main rationales of collecting and integrating data systems are efficiency and effectiveness. The functions of these five assessment tools are as follows:
Fidelity measures: fidelity measures are in place to assess how reliably educators implement established practices with fidelity.
Screeners: screening tools are used to identify students who may need additional supports beyond Tier 1.
Diagnostic assessment: diagnostic assessments are used after examining screening data to gather further information on current skill levels and specific deficit areas when implementing interventions.
Diagnostic Progress monitoring: diagnostic progress monitoring is used to determine if implemented interventions are producing adequate student growth.
General Outcome Measures (GOM): general outcome measures are used for a more comprehensive view of student development rather than only skills identified for progress monitoring.
