Before the 19th century, English was not considered a discipline and the purpose of it is still debated. Throughout the years, new cultural, social, and philosophical trends have influenced the way English is taught and studied. During module 1, different videos were shown, and several readings were assigned that helped me to relate all the material. In this synthesis essay, I will describe what I learned throughout the videos and the readings by making connections among them.

I have revised my thesis statement to two sentences, rather than one. This is so that my point can be understood in a more effective way. My thesis statement is as follows. “There should be more stringent screening processes for individuals wanting to own guns in the United States because the current laws and regulations do not require mental health background checks and evaluations. Too many people with mental health issues are slipping through the cracks and obtaining weapons and then using them on innocent people.”
The results of the second survey showed an improvement in their understanding and knowledge which influenced positively on their AVB. The video outlining how dangerous speeding is, was displayed in a PC class. After this video was shown the second survey was conducted by a few classes to represent the year 12 students’ AVB towards speeding. A number of key questions were similar to those on the first survey was to identify any improvement in knowledge and understanding, and if personal skills where developed through the use of the video displayed. The questions were also created to enable a direct comparison between the shift in AVB.
The literature review gives justified information for the need of conducting the research. Apart from the introduction, there is no other information concerning the research title that could offer detailed information (Chaliha et a., 2001). I choose three articles that were closely related to my thesis statement. Actually finding these articles were a little more difficult than I first assumed. The first article, titled “Twelve-month outcomes of a randomized trial of the positive thoughts and action program for depression among early adolescents” discusses a randomized clinical trial that surveyed 120 children (ages 11-14) taken from a school community who had high depressive symptoms. I received a 23/35 on my final essay, which is making me nervous since was aiming for a paper that achieves good grade. Also, comparing it to marks that I have gotten in this class which are wonderful, is making me anxious. The first piece of information I learned from chapter three is to provide an opinion or attitude about the facts rather than stating the obvious when writing a thesis. My thesis statement is that the even the smallest spark can ignite the biggest fire. Good ideas, even if only one person has them, can soon spread like wildfire and then everybody is benefitting from it. When reading the African proverb that this paper is a response to, I enjoyed the simplicity of it and it is in its simplicity that its wisdom lies. When viewing the world in its entirety, or the universe for that matter, it is easy to fall into the assumption that no matter what you do, you will not be able to make a difference. This, I can assure you, is false.

For my research project I chose a topic related to social media. Social media has always been an interest of mine and I have always been interested in how people get so caught up with the craze and how they have let it affect them. Since I have never been so attached to social media I thought it would benefit me in being able to experience how some people have been affected. At first I chose “the effects of social media on teenagers / young adults” however once researching I found that my topic was too broad and that I had to refine it. I then chose to research “how does cyber bullying on social media affect teenagers/ young adults”.
