In the novel Roll of thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor a black family has to face racism, segregation, Night Riders, and they have to fight to save their land. But they are one of the only black families in Mississippi to own their own land. In this book there are many characters who show tremendous amounts of courage. Courage is strength in the face of pain or grief. To be courageous you can’t be scared of danger or pain.

For instance, Stacey stays at TJ’s house after the Wallace’s show up. Stacey also has to persevere through all the things that TJ does, and has to take care of him too. Another thing that he probably had a hard time with was being a good role model to his siblings, because he wanted to do stuff but he knew his siblings would copy him even though he didn’t want them to. He also has to own up to his mistakes like when he went to the Wallace’s store after TJ, and he had a choice to tell his parents or not, and he chose to tell them even though he knew he was going to get a beating. I also think that Little man and Cassie showed courage throughout the novel. For example, they both helped out Stacey to trap the bus, and when they were in class together they stood up to the teacher when they saw the inside of the front cover of their “new” books from the Jefferson Davis School. Christopher even showed a little bit of courage when he knew something was wrong, and stood up to his sibling and said that that’s wrong and he wasn’t going. Of course they didn’t listen to him and ha still did the thing he knew was wrong he had enough courage to stand up to them. The kids were very courageous for their age, and never stopped showing
