Within Shakespeare’s famous play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet there are three literary devices used that makes the play interesting. The first literary device that makes the play more interesting is the character motives because it tells the audience more about the character. The second literary device that makes the play more interesting is the suspense because it draws in the audience. The third literary device that makes the play more interesting is the dramatic irony because it demands attention from the audience. The three literary essential devices that make the play more interesting are the character motives, suspense, and dramatic irony.
The first literary device that makes the play more interesting is character motives. “In one respect, I’ll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove, to turn your households’ rancor to pure love,” (2. 3. 90). Friar Laurence’s character motive to wed Juliet and Romeo was to bring the two families together and end the feud. Character motives help the audience

“By my brotherhood, the letter was not nice, but full of charge, of dear import, and the neglecting it may do much danger,” (5. 2. 17). When Friar John was unable to give Romeo his letter from Friar Laurence, it was vital for some action to be made because no one knew what Romeo would do once he discovered Juliet “dead.” Suspense helps draw the audience in as the story progresses while dramatic irony presses for attention throughout the acts.
The third literary device that makes the play more interesting is the dramatic irony. “She’s cold, her blood is settled, and her joints are stiff; life and these lips have long been separated,” (4. 5. 25). Everyone thought Juliet was dead when in reality, she had taken the tonic that Friar Laurence had given her.
