The locks flip on the doors, abandoned shirts are returned from fitting rooms, and the day begins. My part time associate position at Rue 21 is both my source of income and most of my stress. Although working in retail is often considered to be the lazy person’s – the slacker’s – alternative to work, my experiences of it are utterly dreadful: the overwhelming stench of various perfumes clouding the now tainted air, cheap colognes mixing to increasingly enhance the noisomeness; the endless refolding of the same shirts; how the blaring music and screaming children further your perfume fueled headache; the way that countless articles of clothing and hangers are scattered nonchalantly across the fitting room floor because this is now what we American consumers have …show more content…

Surely, I could find an easier job, that also pays more, so why am I still subjecting myself to be demeaned and endlessly badgered by people who think they are superior to me because of the name on my paycheck? I honestly think I just like the discount, but my shopping addiction is a whole other problem in and of its self. While I do not think that I will quit this job anytime soon (even though it is dreadful), I beg of you, next time you interact with a retail worker treat them with respect. Next time someone hands you a fragrance strip politely smell it, put it in your pocket, and throw it away later. Next time you pick a shirt off a table in a store, do not destroy the entire pile in the process. And, next time you see someone harassing a worker for no good reason, do you think you could say something? What I’m asking of you in no momentous feat that takes buckets of courage; I’m simply requesting that you to treat your fellow man as an equal, and this should apply in all situations.
