My overall academic goal is to receive a doctorate degree in psychology. I decided that I wanted to become a psychologist in high school. Before my senior year in high school, I wanted to be a surgeon but the mental health field captivated my interest. During my senior year in high school, I enrolled in an Introduction to Psychology course to see if this sparked any interest in me. I chose to pursue a PsyD over a Ph.D. because PsyD focuses on a student to become a practitioner and a Ph.D. prepares a student to become a researcher. I assisted in an experiment and I found early in the experiment that this was not my strongest ability. My short-term professional goals are to graduate college and enroll into a graduate program. In the graduate program, I would like to master my counseling skills and earn my doctorate degree. In the long term, I would like to increase my knowledge of counseling and utilize the skills I have learned and apply them to identifying and diagnosing mental illness in military personnel. Ultimately, I would like to become license and counsel military personnel and their families.
Attending Argosy University in Washington D.C. would help me to achieve my goal of becoming a psychologist. APA accreditation is a very important factor for me applying this graduate program. Some of the practicum sites include VA hospitals, which would help prepare me for the population I would like to work with. My education as an undergraduate has given me a strong foundation for several of courses required for the degree. Over the course of the trip, we were required to use a journal to log our daily interactions. I learned that many Americans are closed-minded people and are rarely open to new experiences. We went to a gathering near one of the beaches and ate crocodile and kangaroo. Normally, I would not try anything out of the norm but since I was in another country, I decided to try it. For most of the trip, I decided to do activities that I would not normally do in the United States. Recently, I visited Spain and a requirement of this trip was to experience it like a true Spaniard. For most of the trip, I spoke Spanish and ate as many authentic dishes as I could fine.
