When you think of college sports, what team comes to mind? Almost everyone has watched college sports at some point in our lives. Some of us are fans of players, or might have a favorite team, but college athletics bring people together. The bottom line is that there would be no favorite teams or players, or social gathering if it wasn't for the skillful athletes. Many will debate on the topic of whether or not the stars of the show should get paid. College athletes should be paid because without them there would be no college sports.

Not only do college athletes have to make sure they are making every practice and competition, they also have to make sure they are excelling in their studies. This leaves little to no leeway time for them. The time crunch makes it hard for college athletes to support themselves financially, and oftentimes it's hard for them to buy the necessities. For example, student athlete Onashi says that “I was super exhausted” from having to juggle school, practice, and competitions(S3P4). If these athletes are taking on such a heavy workload don't you think they should be getting paid to do so. To add to this “ student athletes sacrifice a social life”(S2P3). Social skills are a big part of succeeding in the real world. This goes to show that if colleges keep making their athletes suffer they are failing them later on in life. For instance a statistic found in Source 1 states “college sporting brought in 1.1 billion dollars” (S1P4). 1.1 billion dollars is a huge sum of money. This highlights that colleges do in fact make enough money to pay their athletes just off their revenues, not even counting other sources available for funding. One commentator, John Oliver quotes “billion dollar industry where athletes are not paid a penny”(S1P5). Consequently athletes are spending all their extra time, and sacrificing a social life just for the industry to make all the money and for them to get none. Without athletes there would be no 1.1 billion dollars gained, so why are these athletes having to suffer.
