As a teenager, it is easy to observe the eating habits of other teenagers. Most teens go for options that do not fit the description of "healthy." Students tend to go for foods that are higher in carbohydrates and saturated fats with many inorganic additives for color, taste, and preservation. These tendencies have led to a growing obesity rate in the United States. Because of this, reform is needed. It can start in the school lunchroom; a healthier menu would be beneficial because it would help with America's obesity problem by helping to educate students about a healthier lifestyle, allow students who already eat healthily to actually purchase a school lunch, and if a student is absolutely against it, he or she can bring his or her own lunch from home. Since the twentieth century, obesity rates have sky rocketed. This is due to the fact that companies do not make foods the way they used to. They add many inorganic substances to make foods taste better, to artificially dye foods to make them look more appetizing, and to preserve foods for longer amounts of time. By cutting back on these unhealthy options and having a healthier menu, students would be more educated about making better choices of the foods they consume. Teaching these concepts through the medium of a healthier menu would influence students to eat healthier outside the school's lunchroom. Another reason for lunchroom reform is that some students opt out of purchasing their lunches from school in light of the fact that the school's lunches are unhealthy. The cafeteria's preexisting menu is not all that healthy. There are many foods served that are high in things like sodium, saturated fats, and excess carbohydrates. Healthier options point to more vegetables, leaner meats, and less foods with inorganic additives.
