Nowadays, we open our phones, laptops, and other devices and immediately subdue ourselves to the irresistible pull of the endless scroll on another social media site. While everyone has different opinions on social media and how it affects us, we cannot deny that it has impacted our world, whether we like it or not. We can also say that it has impacted the Black community with substantial changes. Social media has positively impacted Black communities, with examples such as the #BlackLivesMatter Movement, the establishment and growth of the natural hair community online, and the boost of younger activists. However, it has also had detrimental impacts on communities as well, such as through the lack of representation and hurtful stereotyping of Black girls and women, as well as the invalidation and often dangerous backlash people of the African diaspora receive when discussing racial issues. Many have used social media to highlight important causes and organizations that help the Black community. Social media has allowed for the interconnectedness of people across the diaspora and the things they can relate to, allowing for the unification of shared experiences. This sense of group wholeness can result in shared joy and healing. Social media also brings perspective to different aspects of the Black community, such as the modern natural hair movement. Videos shared across platforms share experiences of having natural hair, give tutorials, and amplify support for others through similar struggles and joys of having natural hair.
