Sports medicine physicians are responsible for working such long hours because there is such a constant high demand for them in the workplace. The younger and less experienced physicians aren’t forced to work such excessive hours unlike those who are more experienced are expected to work close to 80 hours a week. Experts at PSNet say about working hours that, “In 2003, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) implemented rules limiting work hours for all residents, with the key components being that residents should work no more than 80 hours per week or 24 consecutive hours on duty, should not be “on-call” more than every third night, and should have 1 day off per week” (1). Physicians already have to work a ridiculous amount of hours in a week but even when they are off they still might have to come into work because they are always on call. Physicians have to be ready to come to work whenever even on their off days which could sound irritating and scare people away from becoming a sports medicine physician. There are many different shifts that you might have for example, you can work 4 to 5 days in a row or you can work 2 days in a row. To become a successful nurse working during the night shift you should do the following. Use light exposure during the night shift and light restriction in the morning, practice good sleep hygiene, exercise regularly, use sleeping aids with caution, use stimulants and caffeine with caution, consider sleep medicine evaluation (Christensen 36). The most important thing to resolving this problem is to maintain a healthy lifestyle for example, they must have a good sleep schedule, exercise regularly, and also must have a healthy diet. If you are able to stay healthy then you will be able to make smarter decisions and be able to help more of the patients get back quicker. In order to keep everybody safe around you including the people and patients that you care about is that you must be able to keep healthy so you can make smart decisions and be ready for anything. If you want to interact with athletes and coaches and be close to professional sports action then you should become and sports medicine physician. The many problems that physicians face is related to the long and constantly changing hours that they have to work each week. To solve and minimize those problems you must remain healthy and maintain a good and steady sleep schedule.
