Statement Of Purpose: IORG And NHS

In the middle of seventh grade, I joined a service organization called The International Order of Rainbow for Girls (IORG). At first I joined because my grandparents implored me to. After awhile however, I really started to enjoy the service projects we completed. It broadened my perspective of the world and leads me to look for more volunteering opportunities. Nevertheless, that is only the tip of the iceberg with me; I feel that I embody “the values of superior education, exemplary leadership and outstanding public service” which makes me a potential applicant for the Lewis and Elizabeth Dowdy Scholars Program. While attending school I always try my best and attempt to take classes that are not only contribute to my goals, but also challenge me. One way I contribute is by taking a leadership role, this especially applies to IORG and NHS because I am or was the president of these organizations. IORG has definitely had the largest impact because I have spent four years of my life there with my “rainbow family.” Its impact on my ability to lead has improved with my involvement because of the many opportunities to speak in front of crowds and to lead certain service projects. The extracurricular activities that have increased my public service on the other hand are IORG and the volunteer club at school. Having already talked about IORG’s impact, the impact of the volunteer club has also been very large even though I only joined two years ago when the club first started. Joining that club was really the beginning of me recording my service hours. Today I have about 179 hours with almost 50 pending, this is from service projects that influence and help my community. Some examples of these are making cookies for firefighters or taking teddy bears to children at Moses Cone around the holidays which I joined in this winter
