Strategies For Studying In My Freshman Orientation 101 Course

During my freshman year at Coppin State, I have had the privilege of receiving knowledge from my professors. Although I have enjoyed my time as an incoming freshman, I have to remember why I came to Coppin State in the first place. I am attending Coppin State to fulfill my dreams of becoming a full time nurse. However before I can reach this dream, I have to maintain my motivation, courage, and drive. Specifically speaking, thus far I have developed many helpful studying strategies for studying in my Freshman Orientation 101 course. The following are strategies I learned: C.O.R.E., the Three Principles of Deep and Lasting Learning, and the Wise Choice Process. These three principles (Prior learning, Quality of learning, and Quantity of learning), help you strengthen your brain to organize and memorize large portions of information. This method really helped me because I always found it difficult to get the information I need to know for a test to stick in my memory and I would usually find myself forgetting it. The prior learning principle is extremely helpful because it reminds me to use what I already learned to aid me in the process of studying for an exam or test. The quality of learning principle helped me by, showing me how to apply deep processing to memorizing more complex terminology and information. The last principle, the quantity of learning helped me develop practice sessions, and to set frequent times when I should go back and study information again. This principle was the most helpful because it helps put an end to the nights where I would find myself cramming a day or two before a test. The wise choice process contains six easy steps that give you the benefit of finding positive solutions to your problems. The steps are as follows; what is my present situation? How would I like my situation to be? What are my possible choices, what is the likely outcome of each choice? Which choice(s) will I commit to doing? When and how will I evaluate my plan? These steps helped me so much this semester by giving me a simple guideline to solve some of the issues I faced this year. For example, when I had an upcoming quiz in my English class, instead of becoming frustrated, I realized what outcome I wanted after the quiz. That was to pass the quiz successfully to help me maintain a good grade in the
