Christian Nordquist states that doctors say there is a link between the repeated use of an addictive substance and how the human brain experiences pleasure. Its use has a nice reward, leading to further and more frequent use. After a while users do not get the same pleasure as when they first started using so they have to increase the dose. His or her body tolerance to the substance increases. Eventually the user no longer experiences pleasure and takes it simply to prevent withdrawal symptoms. Taking the drug just makes them feel normal. Experts say that when tolerance increases, the risk of addiction is much greater.

Some drugs can change a person in a way that lasts even after they stop using. Changes that drugs cause could last permanently. There are more disabilities, illnesses, and deaths caused from substance abuse than any other health condition. Because drugs affect the way a person’s brain functions, it can cause someone to do harmful things to themselves or others. Drug use interferes with the ability to make decisions and causes many behavioral problems such as paranoia, aggression, hallucinations, and loss of self-control. Abusers are not aware of their actions.
Addiction harms almost every part of a user’s body. Drug abuse or dependence can affect every organ in the body. Drugs cause heart problems, liver failure, seizures, and widespread brain damage. Substances can also cause the development of breasts in men. There are several different health problems that illegal substances cause. People do not think about how drugs can harm their body in the long run.
Genetics is a contributing factor to drug use and addiction. If someone’s parents are users that person is more likely to abuse drugs. At a young age children learn the behaviors of their parents. Children who see their parents use believe this is a normal behavior. The harmful chemicals that a pregnant woman ingests, through drug use, the fetus ingestes too and can be born
