My passion for science goes way back to the moment that I stepped into the movie theatre in fifth grade to watch Apollo 13. This movie was about three astronauts that had an explosion on their spacecraft, about two hundred thousand miles from planet Earth. I was mesmerized, and captivated by the teamwork done by the scientists at NASA. Bringing back these astronauts back on Earth safely is one of the greatest accomplishments in history. I loved learning about astrophysics and astronomy. As a curious child, I invariably questioned all the things around me. Gaining as much knowledge as possible about the universe was my fundamental ambition in life. A few years ago, a firefighter had a historic face transplant at New York University Langone Medical …show more content…
This is a special school that has intelligent thinkers, and scientists that work hard everyday to make a change. That is one of the reasons why I am applying for the Summer Undergraduate Research Program. I would want to be part of this community where knowledge is always stimulated by curiosity. I find research to be an exciting phenomenon, because it challenges you to think outside the box to solve disparate problems. Microbiology was one of the courses that I took and found intriguing. The reason why this course stands out from the many other courses I took, is because there are endless mysteries scientists are still not able to solve in the microbial world. One of my professor's, who is a microbiologist, allowed me to work with him on his research on Escherichia Coli, and how this bacteria respond to environmental stressors. In our day and age, bacteria is a hotspot in research, because one of the greatest fears people have is antibiotic resistant bacteria. This has opened a new door in research to figure out how to revoke this alluring, and precarious phenomenon. During this SURP program, doing research in microbiology or cell biology will give me the opportunity to explore, and think about the incessant questions that have to be
