Coming from a rural high school, I was not truly exposed to the STEM fields until I came to college. As a sophomore now at Texas Tech University, I have been attained a passion and appreciation for the STEM fields. Science is my captivation. Learning not only how the world functions on a microscopic level but also how this is used in application in every day life, has been the inspiration for my college degree in Microbiology. I am currently on a pre-medicine path at Texas Tech University. This path, along with being in Texas Tech’s Honors College, has exposed me to several different aspects within the field of science. I have already delved deep into the field of Chemistry, taking Honors courses in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry. From these courses, I have gained insight into the mind and personality of those unlike myself. Particularly, during the semester I was enrolled in childhood development. I learned about the foundation of a young person’s willingness to learn. This understanding, accompanied with a similar passion from some close friends to help young students, lead to my motivation in co-founding of our Honors organization, STEM and Leaf Organization. This volunteer organization aims to assist mainly underprivileged students in middle and high schools that have fallen behind in classes. We started with a small group of six volunteers but have grown to over twenty members that guide young students that haven’t always had school as a primary focus in their lives. As vice-president of this organization, seeing the growth and success of not only the students but also the members has been a worthwhile
