Supporting Literacy Development Through Language Language Function. Using information about your students’ language assets and needs, identify one language function essential for students to develop and practice the literacy strategy within your central focus. One language function that my students must develop is comparing two unlike things. This is essential when using similes and metaphors. They must be able to do this with or without using like or as. Using similes and metaphors can be difficult for my ELL students because they are often very literal when they are talking. They do not often compare things that are unlike each other. In my first lesson I utilize informal assessment often to determine if my students understand each type of figurative language. I will use this informal assessment to adjust my lesson as necessary to meet the needs of my students. If they are struggling to understand one type of figurative language, I will try to explain it a different way and provide more examples. At the end of my first and second lesson, I use formal assessments in which my students are responding individually. I will use these assessments to determine the conceptual understanding of each of my students. This will help me adjust my lesson the for the following day to correct any confusions or misconceptions of my students. These assessments specifically address the objectives that are being taught that day. It is important that my students understand these objectives before we move on, so I want to make sure any misconceptions are addressed in before any new concepts are
