Verizon Wireless has been the gold standard for product and service quality in the U.S. wireless industry for more than 10 years and as a result, they have long been considered America’s #1 wireless service provider. Subsequently, Verizon remains the industry leader in market share, subscribers, profitability, and customer loyalty. Nevertheless, the wireless industry has become significantly more competitive in the last few years (Fiercewireless, 2016). Starting in 2013, T-Mobile launched its “Un-carrier” strategy with the intention of enhancing their service and product quality by dissolving industry norms such as, service contracts, equipment subsidies, and data limits (Sherman, 2013). To begin with, Verizon was wise to accelerate the launch of their Unlimited Plan and aggressively price the plan near competitive parity with T-Mobile (Snider & Blumenthal, 2017). Secondly, Verizon prudently leveraged the superior product quality of their network to allow unlimited HD video, rather than changing an additional fee for HD video, like T-Mobile. However, T-Mobile has since adopted Verizon’s approach of offering unlimited HD video without an additional fee. Therefore, moving forward, it is vital that Verizon stop counter punching and assume the role of the aggressor by fully leveraging its product and service quality advantages to put T-Mobile on its heels. Subsequently, Verizon should leverage its size and economies of scale to accelerate the launch of a 5G network, thus allowing the company to offer products that could not be matched by T-Mobile for 1 - 2 years (Meola, 2016). Additionally, Verizon must continue to enhance its service quality by simplifying its systems, products, and processes so customers believe they are easier to do conduct business with as a wireless provider.
