Teacher Observation Report: Belton School

Kelly Crumley is the Principal at Scott Elementary within the Belton School District. I met Kelly in 2015, she was the summer school principal for the building I was teaching at. That year, she was also named the assistant principal for Mill Creek Upper Elementary. Kelly served as the assistant principal for one year and then in 2016, she accepted a job as the principal of Scott Elementary. She has been a principal at Scott for almost one school year. She has always been very open to share her successes and failures with me. I admire Kelly’s hard work and dedication. She is an amazing leader and mentor.
Scott Elementary has 303 students and 21 teachers. 12% of the student population are black, 8.6% are hispanic, 69% are white. 162 (57%) students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Each classroom has on average, 17 students. The low classroom numbers help decrease disciplinary issues and teacher stress level. 43% of the teachers at Scott have a masters degree or higher.
The Belton School District uses TalentED as a teacher observation form. TalentED is based on nine standards:

Teachers and administrators are held to high standards. Administrators give honest feedback to teachers and are willing to partner with teacher to improve instructions. I was happy to hear that even though there isn’t any formal teacher evaluation training, Belton administration leans on each other for understanding. What a beautiful culture of trust and support. The interview gave me a deeper understanding of TalentED and what a principals are looking for during an observation. I have a better understanding of what a highly effective teacher does. Kelly talked about her experience terminating a teacher’s contract and all of the steps that had to be in place years before the process even began. I am so impressed with her courage and dedication. She is truly a principal that makes choices based on what is best for
