I strongly believe a teacher must always understand the student interest to always be adaptable. By establishing a great rapport with students, it allows the teacher to be relatable to students. It gives students something to look forward to when they get to school and allows both the teacher and student to create strong relationships. I believe a teacher that understands the culture of the school district as a whole is able to be understand students through multiple perspectives. Having a teacher that establishes a solid rapport with students is able make connections with students on specific interests and allows the teacher to adaptable in the classroom. For example, a teacher giving a lesson in an economics class full of athletes may use examples of sports to help content be relatable for students. Not only should a great teacher be able to use their knowledge of the students, their subject matter, and school district to make a positive learning environment, but great teachers should also always be a positive role model for students. Through my personal experience with both teaching and coaching I have found that students will ultimately have a mutual respect to you, if you show interest in a student’s life. More importantly showing genuine concern for students allows students to feel comfortable around the teacher. I strongly believe that teachers have just as much impact on students’ lives as parents. Teachers that are able to affectively acknowledge a student’s interests and concerns are able to impact a student’s life positively. to specific skills and abilities of all students. For example, asking what students interests are I would be able to implement these interests into lessons. I had found that by doing this, it causes student to understand the material better because they can make connections from their personal lives to the lesson. I would also implement a wide array of technologies, images, and styles of teaching to expose students to different teaching methods. For example, in previous lesson I used PowerPoints with pictures that correspond to topics and I have also used PowerPoints that use pictures of images students might find relatable (food, music, sports etc.) I would also use different teaching methods such as debates, group work, note-taking, project based assignments, etc. This gives students with different learning abilities and preferences the motivation to follow the lesson. Specifically to my subject matter in social studies I would use material from today’s world such as, newspapers, sports, social media, movies, TV shows, etc. to get students thinking on a much broader scale than what is said in textbooks.
