Research carried out during 1970’S to 1980 does indicate that the number of accidents caused by drunken teenagers in the US was 40%. To curtail the deaths the US passed a law that the legal drinking age should be 21 (Cary). There was a drop in the number of accidents on the freeway but this did not guarantee that the teenagers were not drinking. The concerned parties such as the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) stated that the teenagers were not ready for the responsibility that came with alcohol. Medical professionals reported that if a child is exposed to alcohol in an early age it might hinder the development of the brain. There are teenagers who take to drinking as a social behavior while there are those that take to it as a way of escaping reality. In Europe, many teenagers are used to seeing their parents drinking occasionally. To them drinking is a social activity due to the richness of the country in alcoholic drinks, which is well integrated into their culture within the context of the family (Friese, Bettina, and Grube 1). While in the USA, many parents do allow their kids to drink in their presence as a way of having a good time. On the other hand, teenage drunken behavior is a result of emotional stress. They result to alcohol to escape from their harsh realities. Alcohol is not encouraged among young kids, and the adults are advised to consume alcohol in areas far away from their children.
