Our lives today revolve around technology. The constant revolution and invention of new technology is the reason our society is so advanced. It allows us to use everything from GPS in your car to accessing textbooks or even becoming a full time student online. In recent discussions of the role of technology in the education system, a controversial issue has been if the use of technology in the classroom is helping or harming students. I argue that this technology is helpful, as it accelerates learning and increases student ability to absorb information. Some people maintain that students have lost the ability to think and work for themselves because of this technology, such as the Internet, that just “gives” out answers. However, this argument is not convincing because technology, specifically the Internet, allows information to be easily accessed by students of all grades and ages. Moreover, the opposing argument overlooks the fact that with technology students are given more options, such as online schooling, that were never available in the past. In Jason Orgill and Douglas Hervey’s article, Online Learning Programs Are Changing the Way Students Learn, they state “A greater selection in course offerings will also motivate students and improve their educational experience.” I agree with their point because students who attend smaller schools may not have as many courses available to them as those in larger schools do. Online schooling gives these students the opportunity to take classes they are interested in without the hassle of traveling to other schools. Critics of online schooling, such as Mark Edmundson in his article, The Trouble With Online Education, argue it does not allow students to receive the same face-to-face contact, preventing them from gaining the education they would in an actual
