The Media and Cloning Ethics
After carefully reading Leigh Turners, “The Media and Ethics of
Cloning” I have discovered that cloning is a reality with more experimentation in the near future. Clones are organisms of exact replicated DNA. Many people may find that cloning is inhumane or playing
God, for those with religious affiliation. Cloning may create a debate on human values, thus causing many to form a biased opinion on the matter of cloning. Turner gives reference to the media and how their opinions for public debate include: legal, moral, political, and medical dimensions. However, the media’s opinion is almost always biased. People is meant to describe the scientists and ethicists working together to address the media. Turner said, “The formal education of most scientists does not encourage them to consider ethical issues”. This is absurd because they need to be able to explain their works with the understanding that most people follow some sort of ethics. Turner also stated, “Similarly, most ethicists have very little knowledge of science, although many of them feel perfectly entitled to comment on the moral issues of new scientific discoveries”. This too is terrible because I believe if you’re going to speak then you should be knowledgeable on the topic.
Second, ethicists need to be more precise when they present their works to the media. Most just publish their findings without regard to moral implications as stated previously. More ethicists need to present their work in a manner that is suitable both ethically and scientifically. One way is that they can create more productive public debates. Having more public debates and holding each accountable for their work will allow a more diverse understanding of their nature.
