Introduction This paper will define the organizational structure of Advocate Sherman Hospital. Advocate Sherman Hospital is located in Elgin, Illinois and is one of the many hospitals associated within the Advocate Health Care System. Sherman is a Magnet hospital that functions as a level II trauma center for the community; the organization employees 650 physicians and 2,220 associates (Advocate Health, 2014). This organization not only handles patient’s that are admitted to the hospital but also has a variety of outpatient clinics located both at the facility and around the greater Chicago area.

A good example is Outpatient Cardiovascular Services. This department is grouped an APRN, RNs, CV Technicians, Echo Technicians, and Secretaries. They all have a specialized task when it comes to the patient’s they see; even though their jobs may have a slightly different scope-of-practice they all specialize in the heart and have shared characteristics which is aiding in diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases. This is also an example functional departmentalization. There are always changes in healthcare happening. To implement change at this organization it has to go before a committee and then up the chain of command. The process of approval can be a very lengthy and drawn out. Sometimes the change is implemented so long after it’s dated. This can be very frustrating for employees. Communication is another big topic. Instead of things having to go up or down the chain-of-command communication needs to flow freely throughout the organization. The organization can grow if they involve more employees in decision making instead of just top management. This would make implementing change easier. The last thing would be to re-evaluate employee goals. This organization does offer education assistance but it’s barley enough to cover a semester. Organizations have better outcomes and happier employees if they feel like they are invested
