Since 2000, around 16 million in government funds have gone to Wayne State University, or WSU, for animal research, specifically for experiments that use dogs to attempt to simulate or replicate cardiovascular conditions in humans. However, Wayne State’s methods of research have concerned Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, who aims to file a lawsuit against WSU. These dogs are used to simulate cardiovascular conditions. For example, “The dogs have the blood flow to their kidneys obstructed to create hypertension.”
In the medical science world, scientists have many ways to find cures for diseases or to figure out if one product is safe for the general public. Animal experimentation, the most common method, is a very inhumane way of testing out certain experiments. In some labs, scientists try and compensate the animals by giving them sort of treatment after experiments. Surprisingly some scientists fail to realize that common primates used in testing have the same sensitivity as humans, they might aswell be testing on humans. Jeory, the author of the article, quotes Dr. Goodall saying; “I can state categorically that they have a similar capacity for suffering, both mental and physical, and show similar emotions to many of ours”.
Although experimenting with animals has advanced what people know about the world today, there are now new methods that do not involve experimenting on animals. According to the article “About Animal Experimentation” by Humane Society International, “Human genome and birth of functional genomics, the explosive growth of computer power and computational biology, and high speed robot automation of cell based screening systems has sparked quite a revolution in biology…predictions regarding human safety and risk are potentially more relevant to people in the real world than animal tests.” (About Animal Experimentation). Methods such as computer biology, genomics, and more have resulted from people trying to find other ways to test for what they
Animal testing goes as far back to greek philosophers such as Aristotle (384 – 322 BC) and Erasistratus (304 – 258 BC). Whom once performed testing on animals to advance behavior of something or who aspired to alter brain activity. However there was scientists such as Galen (129 – 199 / 217 AD), who used animals in order to attempt to improve various human activity within the body. Specifically focusing on cures and treatment for those who don't have them. Later, Ibn Zuhr began to use animal testing to benefit humans in which he would perform surgeries on them to ensure that the procedures would not harm humans.
Testing, experimenting, assessing, and scrutinizing are apart of the procedures that harmless animals are put through every day in order to benefit the human life. What makes torturing animals with chemicals considered a good thing? Animals involved in testing include: rats, rabbits, hamsters, cats and dogs. Imagine a household pet, such as a cat or dog, being put against their will placed in chemicals with no good reasoning? Whether or not you’re human, living creature still deserve to be treated respectfully and fairly, and based on the percentages and experiments being placed on animals; there is no respect or fairness given.
Testing on animals can cause animals to die because of the chemicals that are used. “The U.S law allows animal testing to be allowed, and the law says that is good for animals
New studies are being published on the ethical failings of researchers to adequately represent data in a variety of contexts. This could have serious implications for the veracity of certain information germane to deliberations on whether or not studies should progress to the next stage, among other things. One new American study, for example, has found that placebo groups are used often in clinical trials despite a lack of appropriate guidelines for how they can be used, and the study shows how problematic that is. Meanwhile, a German and Canadian study is showing what is perhaps an even bigger deal, which is that inadequacies in the designs of animal studies as well as insufficient reporting of said studies are proving to be a circumvention
With the questionable accuracy of animal experimentation to answer the questions, we have about the human body system the next question that is asked is whether animal experimentation is necessary. The main reason animal experimentation is questioned on its necessity is because scientists all over the world have developed alternatives. A different type of alternative mentioned was cellular tests. Cellular tests are experiments that measure white blood cell response to chemicals and medical substances which can take the place of rabbit injections (Ask).
There are people out in the world who don’t see the good things when I come to animal testing. They just look at all the negatives and think about the animals in the process of the experiments and researches. What they don’t see, is that how much they help us humans in staying alive and making special treatments. When testing the animals, they have contributed to so many cures and treatments, and sometimes the animals don’t even die. According to ProCon.org on November 2, 2017, “animal research has also contributed to major advances in understanding and treating breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, and etc.”
all of the sick individuals that it helps because the act of utilizing non-humans in research does the most good for the most people (Lyons, 2001). Protesters are also considered stakeholders due to the fact that they are usually advocating animal sentience and their rights to live naturally, and not in a laboratory setting. Typically, protestors often have an issue concerning this dilemma due to their own ignorance. Unfortunately, this ignorance usually centers on misinformation obtained from the internet, their own imaginations, and the fact that they do not believe that animal research is necessary. Due to their position of ignorance, a protestor cannot present fair scientific data unless they have actually experienced the animal research
Animal experimentation is used by most researchers in the United States, and products need to pass numerous tests on animals before they are approved by the FDA. This is why many animals are used in an experiment; Almost 12,000 animals are used in almost 50 tests for a single pesticide. Is this really necessary? Although testing on animals can protects humans from dangerous products, animal experimentation is not necessary because too many animals die, many tests animals pass fail on humans, and thousands of animals are being tortured. First, too many animals end up dying from being experimented on.
Animal Testing: Justifying the Science Modern advances in science and health are a result of animal experimentation. According to the California Biomedical Research Association, “Why Are Animals Necessary in Biomedical Research?” “For more than a hundred years virtually every medical breakthrough...has been the direct result of research using animals”(1). Even though this is true, organizations like PETA and others are still against the fact that animal research is good for the world. From humans better understanding life threatening diseases like cancer or HIV, to learning more about Heartworms in canines.
Animal research, a debate for animal rights. Several experts believe the idea valid to debate, while numerous deem the idea absurd. Richard L. Cupp Jr., professor of law at Pepperdine University School of Law, states in his article,¨Animal Cruelty Laws Don't Depend on Animal Rights,¨ that,¨ Rather than focusing on rights for cats and dogs, we should focus on human moral responsibility.¨ People are arguing that we should give animals personhood. ¨Biomedical researchers must study laboratory animals to discover new medicines and therapies, and deem them safe and effective,¨ says Frankie Trull, president of the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR). She says this, stating that without animal research, there would be no cure for
Animal testing is a controversial issue that is portrayed by society to be an ethically inappropriate practice, while possessing many advantages. Although people choose to turn a blind eye on its commodities and support banning it, it is extremely essential that it remains legal. Animal experimentation has benefited animals as much as humans, increased medical advancements and made several life-threatening diseases treatable. People hear the words “animal testing” and quickly think about animal cruelty. However, despite animals being the subjects of experimentation, they benefit from it just as much as humans do.
So, even if they cannot complain or scream during and after laboratory tests, they still feel pain. Moreover, sometimes animals are killed after the experiment if they had not died during it. Just in the United States more than 100 million of animals are killed yearly for research purposes (1). It is a huge number that in the end will lead to the extinction of animals. Thus, animal testing must be banned.
