What is Fracking? Fracking has been around for many years and will probably continue to exist for a while longer as long as there is no other alternative option that is cheaper than it. Fracking is the process of drilling down and injecting water fluids at a high pressure into the ground in order to shatter rock to release the natural gas up into the surface and so we can extract oil. Fracking is a big deal in the United States in general. There have been many arguments of fracking because it can seriously affect the environment around it. For example leaks of methane can contaminate the water and make it harmful to people who come in contact with it or drink it. Studies have shown that the methane that is released damages the ozone layer and is one of the causes of global warming. Methane is more dangerous than coal and oil burning up. Even though it is far more dangerous than using coal and oil, people use it because it is a cheaper alternative and their profits will be greater. Global warming puts the ecosystem, habitats, and people everywhere at risk. Even though global warming is inevitable, reducing the amount of fracking and/or using different materials can help slow down the process. Not only is it affecting our atmosphere, but also our water supplies. There have been reports where leakage has contaminated water supply, but the side effects on people have not yet been studied. But one thing is for sure, it will have negative effects on the human body, animals, and the environment around. There have been reports by the people who live next to where fracking occurs. They report that their homes have been damaged due to the fracking. These reports also say that these people do not want them to keep fracking because of the damages it has caused.
