At the age of eighteen, I am allowed to legally pick up a rifle, enlist in the military, and go to battle with other legal adults. I am allowed to get a tattoo without permission from someone else. I also can go to prison for criminal offenses depending if they lead to jail. One thing I am not allowed to do is to be in possession of marijuana or smoke it. With all the other freedoms I can have, why not this one?
Marijuana is a mind altering chemical that has the ability to give you highs when you smoke it enough. It is similar to tobacco, but some people argue it to be more dangerous, and are against legalizing it. For example, these addictive drugs with no medicinal value include cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and others. While it is potentially a gateway drug, so is alcohol, tobacco, and/or prescription drugs. Other factors also lead to serious drug abuse and drug dependence. So why is marijuana taking the blame?
Other troubles that may be averted by legalizing marijuana are that it may increase job openings.These new jobs can create more opportunities for more people, and decrease the current unemployment rate. If these jobs are no longer illegal and overseen by a manager or by a government official, then less illegal drugs will be sold to less people. It will also stimulate the economy. Isn’t that what we want?
Now, this proposition is not 100% effective. The shop may sell illegal drugs to people who ask them without the government knowing. This crisis can be avoided by having permits given to business owners who have been background checked. Permits would be given to those who do not have a history of selling or using several dangerous and highly addictive drugs. Identification and records can also be kept, just like when buying a firearm or obtaining a
