There are an estimated twenty- seven million adults and thirteen million children who are involved with sex trafficking and roughly two thousand five hundred trafficking victims are believed to still be drifting at sea. Victims are usually beaten, ill treated, drugged, raped and prostituted, but nothing is being done. In the Sex trafficking industry females make up fifty- five percent, males make up forty- five percent, and of those percentages children make up fifty percent. Roughly estimated one point two million children are trafficked every year. When a child or new victim is just starting the traffickers often train the girls themselves by, raping them and teaching them sex acts.
However, the Internet has also played a growing role in sex crimes. Cyber stalking—threatening behavior or unwanted advances using the Internet or other high-tech communication is a well documented problem. Slavery is thought to be a thing of the past. If you would have asked me two years ago if slavery was still occurring, I unquestionably would have said no. However, human trafficking, a form of modern day slavery, is generating billions of dollars around the world. In 2016, an estimated 40.3 million people were in modern slavery. 1 in 4 of those victims were children.
Online predators are individuals that prowl social media websites and online chat rooms, usually pretending to be a child, to either lure children to meet them where they will sexually abuse them, or to entice them to send personal pictures to the predator. As of 2015 there are 799,041 registered sex offenders in the United States. (PureSight, n.d.) A more recent method that online predators have been using to lure children is online gaming. In 2012, Microsoft, Disney, Sony, and Electronic Arts launched “Operation Game Over”, in which they shut down over 3,500 accounts belonging to registered sex offenders.
Social Media is a hunting ground for sex offenders something I was not surprised about however, the different styles sex offenders have used over the years caught my eye. A method mentioned by the speaker was that the offender would make multiple accounts and go into a chat room and try to stalk the victim. The multiple accounts would make one of the accounts look like a good guy and lure the victim into the trap. Packingham v. North Carolina identifies the internet as a risk.
