Human trafficking today is a billion dollar industry and is “based on the principles of supply and demand” (“Human Trafficking”). There are usually three different types of people that are trafficked. These types include children who are under 18 and sold into commercial sex, adults who are forced into commercial sex, and those who are forced to provide labor or services (“Human Trafficking”). There are even a lot of very current examples of human trafficking. One example made its way into the New York Times on September 15, 2014.
There will be no solution to the growing problem of human trafficking until more people are aware of how human trafficking takes place, until states begin to deter human trafficking more effectively, and until more individuals take an active role in reporting possible acts of trafficking to the proper authorities. Therefore human trafficking cannot be defined as any one particular crime; it is not simply sexual exploitation. Other forms of human trafficking are labor trafficking, slavery and in some cases human trafficking consist of the removal of organs. It is much more than that because human trafficking has many different characteristics. On average, girls as young as eleven years old are being marketed and portrayed as adults on these websites and then bought and forced to have sex with these sick-minded men. The internet has allows us to communicate with others near and far, as well as how spend our free time has changed dramatically. Not only has the internet brought many positives it has brought us many problems as well. Internet has given criminals a new way to commit crimes from anywhere in the world.
There are an estimated twenty- seven million adults and thirteen million children who are involved with sex trafficking and roughly two thousand five hundred trafficking victims are believed to still be drifting at sea. Victims are usually beaten, ill treated, drugged, raped and prostituted, but nothing is being done. In the Sex trafficking industry females make up fifty- five percent, males make up forty- five percent, and of those percentages children make up fifty percent. Roughly estimated one point two million children are trafficked every year. When a child or new victim is just starting the traffickers often train the girls themselves by, raping them and teaching them sex acts.
The Council of Europe states that “people trafficking has reached epidemic proportions over the past decade, with a global annual market of about 42.5 billion dollars”. In general, the criminal business feeds on poverty, despair, war, crisis, and ignorance. It is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world. However, the Internet has also played a growing role in sex crimes. Cyber stalking—threatening behavior or unwanted advances using the Internet or other high-tech communication is a well documented problem. Mobile phone, surveillance, and computer technologies provide new ways to harass or intimidate victims. Photos or video taken during a sexual assault can be quickly and widely shared, creating further trauma for victims. Potential criminals increasingly use chat rooms and quick messaging to seek victims, whether adults or youth.
Not only do people come in contact with sexual predators, but scammers, blackmailers, liars, and even thieves. Many people seem to overlook those because you mostly hear about cases such as “Young girl goes to meet online boyfriend, and was raped by a 38 year old man.” and so forth and so on. There was an abundance of safety issues with people who can obscure their identity
Slavery is thought to be a thing of the past. If you would have asked me two years ago if slavery was still occurring, I unquestionably would have said no. However, human trafficking, a form of modern day slavery, is generating billions of dollars around the world. In 2016, an estimated 40.3 million people were in modern slavery. 1 in 4 of those victims were children.
Recruiters or traffickers prey on vulnerable individuals, who hope for a better life and other kinds of dreams, in order to make money. These individuals are lured in and out of foreign countries and the United States through false promises. They are then given forced labor for long and strenuous hours which has a negative effect on their bodies in various ways mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Traffickers are able to manipulate individuals, who come from broken homes, who aren’t financially stable and through other kinds of factors. Human trafficking can be happening right in one’s face, and the person might not even know it, because victims of human trafficking work in places like nail salons, restaurants, factories, and other places.
A huge misconception that must be clarified is that not all sex work is sex trafficking. There is a huge difference between sex trafficking and sex work. Sex trafficking according to Shared Hope International “occurs when someone uses, force, fraud or coercion to cause a commercial sex act with an adult or causes a minor to commit a commercial sex act.” Sex work, on the other hand, involves consenting adults and clients participating in a commercial sex act. Inevitably both things collide because they have to do with the same occupations; things like pornography, prostitution, and stripping can be found in both.
Social Media is a hunting ground for sex offenders something I was not surprised about however, the different styles sex offenders have used over the years caught my eye. A method mentioned by the speaker was that the offender would make multiple accounts and go into a chat room and try to stalk the victim. The multiple accounts would make one of the accounts look like a good guy and lure the victim into the trap. Packingham v. North Carolina identifies the internet as a risk.
