The Purpose Of The Human Genome Project

1050 Words5 Pages

The human genome project was established in 1990 to map out the complete sequence of the human DNA6.
The Human genome project was launched because scientists wanted to understand the mechanism behind inherited diseases like cystic fibrosis. These teams of scientists believed that they could find novel methods to treat cancer and heart disease and decrease the death rates from these diseases. DNA research reveals connections between evolution connections and human identity5.
The human genome project has three aims:
• To update the available information on human genetics i.e. to improve research infrastructure- Research infrastructure is the biological, methodological as well as informational tools used in genetic research. The important genetic infrastructure used are physical maps of DNA, characterized DNA clones and genetic linkage maps. Human genetics is unique because it is limited to the examination of an individual, families, population as opposed to model organisms, which bred specifically for the purpose of genetic research1.

Genetic testing is becoming less expensive these days. For example, sequencing the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes over ten years ago cost £1,000 but now it costs less than half this price and the results are out in less than a week. There is an on-going project to sequence 100,000 genomes in England over the next four years and it would cost £300 million. This project would involve mapping out the genome of 100,000 people as part of a public health programme. During the initial period of three to five years, up to 100,000 people with cancer or certain rare diseases will have their DNA mapped
